Guide for professional services
Google reviews for accountants, consultants and B2B firms
Clients choosing an accountant, lawyer, consultant or agency rarely pick from Google alone, but most check the reviews before they call. This guide covers when to ask long-term clients, how to word it, and how to fit it around year-end and project cycles.

Why professional firms have fewer reviews than they should
Most professional firms have loyal clients who would happily recommend them, and very few Google reviews. The reason is usually that nobody asks. Relationships are personal, asking feels awkward, and there is no obvious moment like the end of a meal or a finished job.
Yet prospective clients, especially small businesses choosing an accountant or a sole trader choosing a lawyer, increasingly search first. A handful of recent reviews that mention responsiveness, clear advice and fair fees can be the difference between a call and a pass.
Find the natural moments to ask
- When a piece of work is delivered: annual accounts filed, a tax return done, a contract signed, a project launched.
- When the client thanks you. A thank-you email is the easiest opening there is: reply with thanks and a link.
- After a problem is solved well, such as a dispute settled or an audit query answered.
- When the invoice goes out for a completed engagement, because it marks the end of the work.
Avoid asking in the middle of a long engagement, during a dispute, or straight after a fee increase.
How to word it
Write as yourself, not the firm. A short personal email works best: thank the client for the work, say that most new clients find you through Google and read reviews first, and ask if they would share a few lines about working with you. Make it easy to say no.
Business clients often worry about what to say. Suggest a prompt without writing the review for them, for example: "Even a sentence about how we helped with your year-end would be great." Our review request templates include a version for longer engagements.
Make it easy for busy clients
Business owners and finance managers are busy, and a review request competes with everything else in their inbox. Three things lift the response:
- Send it from the person the client actually works with, not a no-reply address, so a reply reaches someone.
- Put the direct Google review link on its own line. Our guide to finding your Google review link shows where to get it, and the free review link generator makes one in a couple of minutes.
- Ask once and follow up once at most. A gentle reminder a week later is fine; more than that strains a relationship you have spent years building.
If a client asks what to write, point them at what a prospective client would want to know: how responsive you were, whether the advice was clear, and what changed for their business as a result. Keep it a suggestion. The words must be theirs, and a review you drafted for them is not a genuine review.
Some clients will prefer not to post anything publicly, often because of their own industry rules or because they do not want competitors to know who advises them. Respect that without fuss. Private feedback is still valuable, and a client who feels no pressure is more likely to refer you by word of mouth, which matters even more in professional services than a review.
Plan around year-end and quiet periods
Professional work runs in cycles. In New Zealand most businesses balance on 31 March and individual returns follow; in Australia the financial year ends on 30 June. The weeks after a deadline, when work has been delivered and the pressure is off, are a good time to ask. December and January are often quieter for advisory work and suit catching up with clients you have not asked yet.
If you invoice through Xero, Rocket Review can start a request from each approved invoice, so clients are asked as work is billed rather than in a once-a-year push. You choose who is approved, so a client in a sensitive matter is never asked by accident. See review requests from Xero invoices.
Confidentiality in replies
Thank reviewers, but never confirm details of their matter or their finances in a public reply. For a critical review, acknowledge it, say you take feedback seriously, and invite the person to contact you directly. Our guide to responding to negative reviews covers the wording.
Measuring how clients feel goes beyond Google. Tools such as Net Promoter questions and regular check-ins help you spot problems early; see what is the Net Promoter System and measuring customer experience.
Reviews and testimonials
Google reviews and website testimonials do different jobs. Reviews are independent and appear in search. Testimonials are chosen by you and work on proposals and your website. Ask for permission before quoting a client, and never edit their words. Our post on synonyms for testimonial covers the different forms of social proof.
Let the requests send themselves
Rocket Review sends your review request to every customer you approve, by email, or by SMS/TXT on Growth and Pro, after the delay you choose, with one optional reminder. Customers come in from Xero invoices, a CSV upload or manual entry, and every customer gets the same two choices: a public Google review or private feedback to you. You can read and reply to your Google reviews from the same dashboard.

Common questions
- Is it professional for an accountant to ask clients for Google reviews?
- Yes, if it is done personally and without pressure. A short email after work is delivered, explaining that new clients read reviews and asking if they would share a few lines, is normal and most loyal clients are glad to help.
- When is the best time for a B2B firm to ask for a review?
- When a piece of work is delivered or the client thanks you. Avoid the middle of a long engagement, a dispute, or the days after a fee increase.
- Can we reply to reviews without breaching client confidentiality?
- Yes. Thank the reviewer in general terms and never mention details of their matter. For complaints, invite them to contact you directly and handle it privately.
- Can we choose which clients get a review request?
- Yes. In Rocket Review you approve each customer before a request is sent, whether they come from Xero invoices, a CSV upload or manual entry, so sensitive matters can be skipped.
