How to ask for Google reviews

The wording matters less than most people think. What gets reviews is asking every customer, soon after the job, with one link that opens straight to your Google review form. A few rules that make any template work better:

    • Ask soon. The same day or within a week, while the job is still fresh.
    • Make it personal. Use their first name and mention the job if you can.
    • One link, nothing else to do. Use your direct Google review link so they do not have to search for you.
    • Keep TXTs short. A single text is 160 standard characters. Longer messages still arrive, but short ones get read.
    • Ask everyone the same way. No rewards, and do not pick only the customers you think will be happy. Google's policy does not allow either.
    • Follow up once, at most. One reminder is helpful. Three is nagging.

Not sure where to find your link? Our guide to finding your Google review link covers desktop and mobile, and the Google review card guide covers QR codes for the counter.

    TXT (SMS) review request templates

Replace the words in square brackets. Your link adds roughly 30 to 40 characters, so these are written to stay close to a single text once it is in.

    Asking in person

At the counter or the end of a job, then follow up with a TXT so they have the link.

Thanks again, it's been good working with you. We're a small business and Google reviews help people find us. Would you mind if I sent you a link to leave one? No pressure at all.

    What to avoid

Do not offer a discount, a prize draw entry or a freebie in exchange for a review. Do not write reviews for customers or ask staff and family to post them. Do not send the request only to the customers who said nice things on the day. Google can remove reviews that break its policy, and a run of removed reviews costs you more than it gained.

It is fine to give every customer a way to tell you privately if something went wrong, as long as the Google option is there for them too.

    Send them automatically

Templates work when someone remembers to send them. Rocket Review sends your wording to every approved customer after each job or invoice, by email or SMS/TXT, follows up once if you want, and shows you who responded. Common questions

How do I ask for a Google review without sounding pushy?
Ask soon after the job, use the customer's first name, say thanks for something specific, and make it easy to say no. One clear link and one reminder at most is plenty.
Can I offer a discount or prize for a review?
No. Google's policy does not allow incentives for reviews, including discounts, freebies and prize draws. Reviews obtained that way can be removed. Thank people for their time instead.
When is the best time to send a review request?
While the experience is still fresh. For a one-off job that is usually the same day or within a week. For services where results take a while, such as some treatments, wait until the customer has seen the result.
Should I ask by TXT or email?
Use the channel your customer already uses with you. A TXT suits quick jobs and appointments because it is short and easy to act on from a phone. Email suits customers you mostly deal with by email, and gives you room for a little more detail.
Where do I get my Google review link?
Open your Google Business Profile, choose the option to ask for reviews and copy the link it gives you. Our guide to finding your Google review link covers the steps on desktop and mobile.
Can I send these templates only to happy customers?
No. Google's policy does not allow selectively asking only customers you expect to leave a positive review. Send the same request to every customer.

    Let the requests send themselves

Use these templates in Rocket Review and every customer gets asked, without anyone having to remember.
